Located on Hosur Road in Bangalore, India was this magnificent Banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis). The Banyan sends down aerial roots which when they reach the ground grow into trunks. The name Banyan has an interesting story to it...when the British came to India, they noticed that under a Banyan they would see local traders (known as Banias) setting up shop. Thus the name 'Banyan', deriving from 'Bania'.
