Baker Beach

A popular stretch of beach where you can enjoy stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands.

Stretching almost two kilometres along the San Francisco coast to the south-west of the Presidio, this sandy spot is a great place to go and admire the incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge and out to the Pacific Ocean.

Of course there is much more that brings the visitors here than the exquisite backdrop. Enjoy a game of Frisbee, go fishing or simply soak up the sun. To the north side of the beach you'll find a famous nudist beach too. In the middle of summer, Baker Beach is a very popular place, so make sure you get there early on to secure a perfect spot.

There is a picnic spot, ideally protected by sand dunes that will keep you sheltered from the ocean winds. Bear in mind however that in the peak season the barbecue pits and tables are taken quickly.

At the north of the beach you'll find Battery Chamberlin, with its 44,000 kg 'disappearing gun'. This was what once kept this coastline safe. You can see the rifle being demonstrated if you visit on the first weekend of the month.

In the area around Baker Beach, you can admire both the dramatic scenery and the wildlife that populates it – some off the most impressive California has to offer. You'll spot flocks of brown pelicans and migrating shorebirds, with dolphins and harbour seals occasionally surfacing on the water.

As well as the great fun to be had on the beach itself, Baker Beach is a gateway leading you to the rest of the Presidio trails – making it a great stop before heading out to explore this stunning region. If you're driving you can park for free near the beach, but spaces here are taken quickly. Buses stop regularly in the upper parking area too. If you want to walk, bear in mind conditions can be hazardous, as the surf around the rocks to the north is strong at high tide.
