Parvati Temples

Parvati Temples showing religious aspects, a temple or place of worship and heritage architecture
The majestic temples that sit atop a picturesque hill with panoramic views of Pune tell the story of the Peshwa dynasty.

The Parvati Temples consist of five 18th-century spiritual homes from the Peshwa dynasty and a museum. The complex stands at the summit of a hill covered with verdant vegetation. Explore the Parvati Temples complex to find the Devdeveshwar Temple, a stunning Hindu monument constructed from blackstone. Enjoy spectacular views of Pune and the surrounding countryside from the hill’s peak, which is 2,100 feet (640 metres) above sea level.

Climb up more than 100 steps to the top of the hill. Many locals use the moderately inclining stairway to get some exercise in a picturesque and historic setting. Begin exploring the five temples to see the idols and decorations devoted to certain deities.

Capture photos of the remarkable Devdeveshwar Temple. Its red-and-gold façade has arches, domes and elegant markings. See the statue of Shiva, which has a rare red spot that gives it sacred importance.

Learn about the Peshwa dynasty that ruled over the region for several centuries. The complex’s museum has many exhibits that tell the story of their reign. See the samadhi (shrine) to a member of the Peshwa family. Examine the paintings of the dynasty members, as well as relics and coins from the era.

Take your time at the various viewpoints that are conveniently dotted around the hill. Look down at the historic city of Pune and try to pick out familiar landmarks. Relish the sense of serenity away from city life as you explore temples that date back hundreds of years. Watch the sky changing colour as the sun goes down over the horizon.

The temples are open from very early in the morning until the evening. The complex of the Parvati Temples sits atop a hill of the same name in the south of Pune. Drive or take a taxi for the 2-mile (3.2-kilometre) journey from the city centre, which should take less than 20 minutes. The site is just to the south of the Jhopadpatti Canal, Saras Baug and the Akkallot Swami Temple.
