Visit a historic island church and a clifftop castle with views of the lake and the country’s tallest mountain.

Bled is a quaint lakeside town amid snow-capped mountains and forests in Triglav National Park. Medieval structures, including churches and an iconic castle, add to the enchanting setting and decorate the many walking paths around Lake BledOpens in a new window.

Climb to the summit of Bled CastleOpens in a new window for a panoramic view of the lake, the town and the white tops of the Julian Alps. Admire the 11th-century structure’s red-roofed turrets and fairy tale-like features. The castle appears delicately balanced on a rugged cliff overlooking the lake.

Trek through the forest and stop for a picnic. Amble along the row of trees on Bled Promenade and note the changing colors of autumn leaves. A park beside Mlino on the southern shore has boats to take you to Slovenia’s only island, where you will find the Church of Sv Marika BozjaOpens in a new window (Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary).

Enter the 17th-century site to see its ecclesiastical relics and the frescoes that pre-date the church. Ring the wishing bell, allegedly given to the church by the Pope, for good luck. Venture into the nearby national park to see Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s tallest mountain. Discover Iglica Waterfall and the Babji Zob Cave nearby.

Just 3 miles (5 kilometers) north of the lake is the Vintgar GorgeOpens in a new window. Walk along the wooden bridges clinging to the cliffs. Admire the misty water rapids, whirlpools and cascades along the stream.

Expect a mild climate of warm summers and cool winters with snow flurries. Learn about the town’s medieval feudal system. Bled became popular with elite classes in the early 1900s due to its picturesque setting and health spa. Explore ski slopes, golf courses and mountain trails in its glorious countryside.

Fly to Jože Pučnik Ljubljana Airport and drive northwest for 22 miles (35 kilometers) to reach Bled. Buses and trains depart regularly from Ljubljana to the lakeside town in the northwestern part of Slovenia.

The serene town of Bled is a romantic part of Slovenia, with the country’s only island and highest mountain.

Lake Bled is just a short drive from Ljubljana airport. We went skiing at Vogel ski centre which was perfect for a short break. Loads to do in the area. Unfortunately Vintgar Gorge was closed at the weekend when we were there which was disappointing.
