In the heart of the south-west, Toulouse is the perfect destination for a weekend break or longer stay. Boasting a rich history and a whole host of cultural influences, everyone should visit the Pink City at least once.

Celebrated in Claude Nougaro's famous song, Toulouse is a city with a real southern French feel, with its narrow streets and distinctive architecture. The city centre is full of ancient buildings and museums.

The iconic Place du Capitole is a good starting point for any visit, or if you're so inclined, to enjoy a drink outdoors, to admire the square and the facade of the Capitole and to drink in the city's atmosphere. Just nearby is the Couvent des Jacobins, an unmissable mediaeval gem. The cloister and the church are simply breathtaking.

The river Garonne flows through Toulouse and its riverbanks are perfect for walks and picnics, weather permitting. From the Quayside, below the city, you'll have a stunning view over the fantastic Pont Neuf and the waves.

For a panoramic view over the city's rooftops, head for Carmes car park. At the end of the day, the setting sun really brings out the city's pink brickwork. You won't regret it!

Toulouse is also the European capital of the aviation and space industry. In particular, Airbus has its headquarters in the city, which is also home to the amazing Cité de l’espace. This space-themed amusement park will let you into all the secrets of space and explore real rockets and other treasures that are out of this world. An unforgettable experience that will leave young and old alike starry-eyed, whether or not they are science buffs.

It's impossible to talk about Toulouse without mentioning its cuisine. Toulouse cuisine is the typical fare of south-western France: confits of poultry, foie gras, cassoulet and Toulouse sausage, as well as products made from violet. If you'd like to take home a sweet souvenir, crystallised violet petals are one of the city's famous specialities.

Toulouse is the perfect destination for sunshine, relaxation and a welcoming atmosphere.

The people are very welcoming and accommodating to foreigners but it is very helpful to know some French phrases. There is some great architecture and plenty of bars/restaurants offering French, Italian, Spanish and oriental/Asian food.
