Get a bird’s-eye view of Turin and stock up on quirky souvenirs in one of Europe’s largest flea markets in this historic part of the city.

The district of Aurora sometimes tends to get missed by visitors to Turin, who are lured first and foremost to the prominent sites such as the Royal Palace, the chapel of which houses the famous Shroud of Turin. Don’t overlook this charming and very authentic area, however. It is a wonderful place to see the residents of Turin going about their daily lives while you make your way between the area’s attractions.

Start your explorations in the picturesque Piazza della Repubblica, known locally as Porta Palazzo. Notice the elegant buildings which surround the square, relics of the time this area was one of Turin’s wealthiest. Stop by the market held here to pick up some souvenirs.

If you can’t find what you are looking for here, you are sure to find it at The Gran Balon, a sprawling outdoor flea market often said to be the largest in all of Europe. Be prepared to spend time really searching there’s plenty of junk to sort through before you get to the treasure. But that’s all part of the fun.

To get a fresh perspective on the city, make your way to Piazza Borgo Dora. This is where you will find the Turin Eye, a hot-air balloon that regularly heads up into the air to a height of around 492 feet (150 meters). Bring your camera up with you to capture beautiful pictures of Turin spread out beneath you.

The Caserma Cavalli is a creative hub housed in a historic building once owned by the military. Some of the work on the building’s renovations was carried out by iconic Italian architect Renzo Piano. See if you can spot the elements that reflect his style. Although this is a space primarily for creative students, regular events are held here, so check what is on before you visit.

Aurora is well served by public transportation but you can also walk here from many parts of the city. Reach it in around half an hour’s walk from Turin’s main train station.

9/10 Wonderful! (100 reviews)
"Not well connected with public transportation. It’s a student dorm, so it doesn’t have all the facilities an hotel would have (eg, a bar). Also, rooms are not really soundproof, I’ve heard noises in the early morning. However, the studio was big and quite new. Good price/quality ratio overall."
