This was an amazing lodge to stay while we travelled around Tongariro National Park. The owners are very friendly and want to make your stay as pleasant as possible. I would HIGHLY recommend staying in this hidden gem. If I ever come back I will most certainly stay here again. Also, their breakfast was outstanding.
Excellent choice for anglers or ramblers. Nice accommodation, hot tub soaking and sitting by a fire at night were great. Hosts are very knowledgeable about the area and make an enjoyable stay.
We were only here for three nights but loved the time we had here. It was welcoming, spotless and our fridge was stocked everyday with breakfast foods, even bacon. The kitchen was really well stocked as was the rest of the house. For us, instead of being lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves at night, we were able to hear the river and drop off to sleep with that beautiful sound, it really was a luxury home away from home. Thank you
The owners are kind and gracious hosts. My trip was more spontaneous, and they did an incredible job in helping me put together a wonderful visit to Tongariro. The bed and bedding are excellent. The cedar hot tub is wonderful after a long day out. Most of all, the peace and quiet was great.

Rebecca and Jason are amazing hosts and go out of their way for their guests!!
Great location by Lake Taupo away from the busier tourist areas and great for outdoor activities such as tramping and fishing. Accommodation first class as was the hosting.
Beautiful modern lodge with gracious hosts. The property has a lot of indoor and outdoor public areas to relax with a glass of wine and book in hand. Rebecca and Jason are attentive, anticipating their clients needs, and are at the ready to make great dining and sightseeing recommendations. The private cedar hot tubs room side are to die for. Highly recommended.
We were only there for a night & were upgraded from a room in the lodge, to the cottage, due to Cyclone Gabrielle which was just beautiful.
Luckily Jason was able to get a booking for dinner that night at The Hare & Copper Eatery plus transport which was a great recommend, although the cottage had full cooking facilities.
Just loved the design of the lodge & cottage!
A fantastic lodge steps from the Tongariro river hiking trails and 15 minutes from the National Park. Jason was a great host. Breakfast was excellent. They are very welcoming and share lots of information and provide access to local guides and equipment. High praise from us!
Beautiful and relaxing, both luxurious and cozy.
We highly recommend the 5-course dinner for an additional fee.
The hiking and rafting vendors that River Birches can book for you are also excellent.
This property is absolutely fantastic! The owners Jason and Rebecca were a complete delight. The property is gorgeous and located within a stone’s throw of great hiking and biking tracks not to mention world-class fishing.
The house is amazing, elegant decoration and warm Lodge. They have a private hot spa and the environment follows Japanese spa style. All elements tell you you are on holiday and are free here. Anthony is a nice masterchief and every dish made by him is such delicious! I can tell the oyster they got is the best I have ever taken. Strongly recommended!
Spacious and beautifully appointed rooms and living/dining areas in an elegant East meets West style. Easy access to riverside walks a real bonus. Owners Jason and Rebecca were fantastic hosts, reaching out to us before our arrival for dinner arrangements and greeting us with welcome drinks in the serene English style garden. We had delicious hot breakfasts and beautifully presented multi course dinners in the lodge by private chef/host/tour adviser Anthony - easy decision to eat in every night after the first night's fantastic dinner featuring line caught trout and wild venison! Jason and Anthony had very helpful advice on tackling the Tongaririo Alpine Crossing and Rebecca made sure we had our hikers' lunches and very kindly sorted our post hike laundry. Our overall experience was of staying with friends in a very warm and welcoming elegantly designed home.
We were looking for relaxing and comfortable accommodations close to the national park so that we could complete the alpine trail. We came across River Birches on Expedia, the pictures and reviews looked amazing and I am pleased to say that they were accurate.
From the moment that we booked Jason and Rebecca (the owners) were in contact to make sure that our stay would be perfect, they checked our arrival time and had everything ready when we got there. As it was our honeymoon they even upgraded us to make our stay even special. Jason was so helpful in booking our private guide during the Trail which was amazing! Our guide Sal was so knowledgeable and provided lots of interesting facts along this 12 mile walk.
The room was modern, clean and relaxing. It had a beautiful bright bathroom with all the amenities. The gardens looked like a Pinterest picture full of roses, tropical plants and herbs. If you want a relaxing stay, with people that care about your experience this is the place for you!
