Two graceful arches mark the southern entrance to Gramado village and make a great place to take a photo as a memento of your trip.
The Portico via Taquara is a grand monument that signals your arrival into the charming mountain village of Gramado. The large gateway was ceremonially opened in 1991. Notice its Norman architecture, designed to honor the German settlers who have strongly influenced Gramado’s culture.
You might think that you are entering a Bavarian village as you gaze at the two towers on either side of the portico, which feature quaint carved wooden balconies and shuttered windows. Stop to take a photo in front of this gateway and visit the small tourist information office, with public toilets, located to the side.
Look for the Christmas decorations that are hung on and around the portico from November to January. Enjoy the special sight of the portico laden with fresh white snow in the colder months.
The abundant flowers blooming around the gateway give you a preview of what to expect in this mountain town famous for its bright gardens. The poetic farewell message written in Portuguese over the arches attests to this beauty. It translates as “Carry the colorful images of Gramado in your eyes.”
Take the side road near the arches to avoid the busy traffic and find a safe place to park. Sit on one of the shaded park benches and have a chat with the other travelers stopping to take photos in this popular spot.
Visit the monument located 4 miles (6 kilometers) from the town center. The park-like setting makes a good place to stop for a few minutes on your planned outing for the day. Rent a private car in Gramado or take a taxi to this site.
