Stiklestad Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
The village in Nord-Trøndelag is famous for the battle that took place here during the Viking Age. But a holiday in Stiklestad has more to offer than just history.

Despite its central location in Norway, people do not come to Stiklestad for a city break. A trip to Stiklestad is aimed at those who appreciate history, nature, good food and cultural experiences. Nord-Trøndelag Theatre is heavily involved in the area and is a co-organiser of the popular Saint Olav Play every summer.

Verdalsøra, situated less than 3 miles from Stiklestad, is important to the region. It is the administrative centre of the municipality of Verdal and the fifth largest town in the county. The town features attractions such as engineering companies and log driving history and provides a great starting point for exploring much of the beautiful nature for which the area is known.

The battle of Stiklestad is set in stone as one of the defining events in Norwegian history, when the so-called peasant army defeated St. Olav on 29 July 1030 as part of the struggle over the Christianisation of Norway. At the place where the king is said to have died, you will now find Stiklestad Church, built in 1180, with the stones against which Olav is said to have fallen incorporated in the altar.

You will also find Stiklestad National Culture Centre next to the church, which runs several excellent exhibitions at all times. The Culture Centre also arranges the Olsok Days at the end of July each year. This festival attracts the largest and most popular artists from Norway, making for fantastic concerts.

If you are tempted by more urban activities, the capital of Nord-Trøndelag County, Steinkjer is only a short drive away. The journey can either be made along the E6, or with beautiful agricultural land on one side and the Leksdalsvatnet Lake on the other.

The lake has two areas of nature reserves and bird sanctuaries, and those who are eager with their binoculars may find it worthwhile to stop on the road to browse for new or unknown species of wildlife. The big cities can wait and Stiklestad will deliver.
