Towering over the heart of the Old Town, this major Hussite religious site is an architectural marvel as well as a thriving classical music venue.

With its beautiful white walls which on a sunny day are bathed in sunlight and by night, illuminated by floodlights, the St. Nicholas Church at the Old Town Square is a beautiful building. Its façade used to be concealed by the neighbouring Krenn House, but now it is visible from the square again. Standing tall and proud over the heart of the Old Town, here you can observe mass, watch one of the many concerts held night after night, or simply gaze at its splendid architecture.

Head inside and you’ll be amazed by its stunning interior, especially the stucco-decorated murals depicting scenes of St. Nicholas. When the monasteries were closed long ago, many of the ornaments here were removed. However, its walls and ceiling remain a spectacular sight.

The church remains active to this day, and you can come along to mass along with the local Hussite religious community each and every Sunday.

Come nightfall however, the church transforms, as it plays host to some impressive classical concerts. St. Nicholas Church is one of Prague’s foremost venues for classical music, and in these glorious surroundings, you can enjoy listening to the strains of the Prague String Orchestra enhanced by the building’s fine acoustics.

Bear in mind when finding your way to St. Nicholas Church that there is also another church of the same name in Prague’s Lesser Town. Though they also have the same style and architect, they are separated by the river and are different sites entirely.

Located in the Old Town, St. Nicholas Church can be reached by public transport or on foot. It is open daily, and is heated through the winter but does get cold in the evening, so take warm clothing. Concerts are held most nights here, but tickets can sell out quickly so it’s advisable to book ahead.
