Stretching along the Atlantic Coast in the south of Brazil, Santa Catarina is a beach lover’s paradise. Discover the perfect stretch of sand for you amid its 350 miles (560 kilometres) of coastline or on one of its several islands.
Santa Catarina has a strong German heritage, which contrasts greatly with its tropical climate. Alpine-style architecture and freshly brewed beer are both in abundance in this state, which also hosts its own annual Oktoberfest celebrations.
Visit the vibrant capital of Florianópolis, which is split into two halves and connected by bridges. Sunbathe on one of the city’s 100 beaches or stroll around the large Mercado Público
(public market), which includes many shops, restaurants and bars. Explore the Museu Histórico de Santa Catarina, housed within the former colonial governor’s palace.
Take the family to Beto Carrero World, said to be the largest theme park in Latin America. The park has a zoo and live shows, in addition to dozens of thrilling roller coasters. Ride the cable car and zip wire at Parque Unipraias for some of the best views of the Atlantic rainforest.
Walk around the decidedly European city of Blumenau, where the state’s annual Oktoberfest celebrations are held. Spend a couple of hours in Vila Germanica Park, a section of Blumenau that features German-style houses, food and music.
If you like your holiday to include some exercise, consider cycling amid Serra do Rio do Rastro, a breathtaking mountain range in the southeastern part of the state. Surf in Guarda do Embaú and Praia do Rosa, two of the most picturesque surfing villages in the region. Hang glide at Praia Mole, one of the most popular sandy beaches in Santa Catarina.
Santa Catarina has two international airports: Hercilio Luz Airport and Navegantes Airport. Fly into either of these airports, then use local taxis to get around. Buses are usually signed in Portuguese and can be difficult to navigate, so rent a car if you are planning to head outside of the main cities.
If you love great beaches, watersports and stunning mountain backdrops then Santa Catarina should definitely be part of your Brazil itinerary.
