San Pedro del Pinatar Travel Guide

Tourist Guide

When you visit San Pedro del Pinatar, make sure to take a wall up the pier near the old wind mill. At the end there's another one. You could go further but you'd walk into the sea. This pier is one of the arms that almost close the Mar Menor. You should time it so that you walk back when the sun starts to set. Seeing the sun set behind the houses, the mountains and into the sea is wonderful.

I have been to the Salinas (or salt lakes) of San Pedro del Pinatar a few times now. A common sight in this nature park are the flamingos. It still takes some getting used to, the fact that these birds actually live in Europe as well! The salinas, which get a beautiful reddish shine when the sunlight hits the water the right way, are located in the still pretty unknown province of Murcia, by the coast of the Mar Menor.

A massive nature park, the Mar Menor lagoon and refined architecture will make your holidays in San Pedro del Pinatar truly spectacular.

San Pedro del Pinatar is a pretty town in Murcia, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor lagoon. When you travel to San Pedro del Pinatar, you can start things off by visiting the estate of San Sebastian commonly known as “Casa del Reloj”, the clock house, due to the clock on its main façade. This Modernist style house has high sloping roofs and a small garden of palms and eucalyptus that will really make you feel welcome.

If you’d like to see more residences, stop by Palacio del Barón de Benifayó. This palace is a beautiful example of Neo-Mudejar architecture and now serves as the headquarters of the town’s archaeological and ethnographic museum.

If you feel like enjoying some outdoor activity, there’s nothing better than visiting the salt mills of Quintín and Calcetera, tucked away in a spot of great natural beauty. They’re perfectly conserved and have been declared a Site of Cultural Interest. As you're nearby, head over to the famous mud baths of San Pedro del Pinatar and don't be afraid to get dirty: not even the most exclusive spa treatments feel this good!

In fact, the area with the mills and mud baths is located within the Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar Regional Park, a protected natural area spanning some 2,100 acres. It’s home to numerous species of fauna and flora, especially birds, including the flamingo and the stilt. Don’t forget your swimsuit, there are some stretches where you can take a dip in the Mar Menor lagoon.

If the weather puts you off that, though, there’s no need to worry! The Sea Museum is another option to make your package deal to San Pedro del Pinatar complete. There you’ll find a wide variety of collections of seashells, conchs, knots, cartographic maps... ideal for uncovering all the secrets of the bottom of the sea.
