Porsgrunn

Providing the perfect balance of urban and rural, inland and coastal, Porsgrunn is a desirable holiday destination for almost everyone.

As a kind of last bastion of the urban and stressful Eastern Norway, the Grenland villages are situated in the natural transition to "gentle, Southern Norway". A perfect starting point to experience both is to take a trip to Porsgrunn. Here you can enjoy everything you have come to expect from a city break, whilst also enjoying lazy days on the pier. Access to water is paramount and on the River Porsgrunnselva, the yachting piers are located side by side.

Porsgrunn International Theatre Festival is unique in Norway and attracts both audiences and performers from across the globe to the city every summer, whilst also being a crucial event for local pride. The music scene in Porsgrunn is also large and diverse, with a number of famous performers hailing from Porsgrunn, all of whom were brought up in the clubs and scenes across town. It's rare you won’t find a concert to see, whether at one of the many clubs in the town or at the large Ælvespeilet venue.

The Grenland area now boasts an outdoor adventure park, Gea Norvegica Geopark, where you can explore the geological peculiarities of the entire area. The park is situated in the city centre, just where the river turns to the West. Here you can learn about local rock types and millions of years of rock formations. Suitable for nature lovers of all ages.

The Grenland area is a hub between the South and the East, and with prosperity came culture. There are a number of international-level art galleries, but the jewel in the crown has to be the Porsgrunn Porselensfabrikk. The factory manufactures a range of functional and decorative items and has an extensive and important position in Norwegian industrial history.

Porsgrunn is a city that really puts itself out there and, with a major focus on art and culture, it is a pleasure to wander the streets here. Whether you fancy an exhibition, a concert or a good meal on the riverbank, Porsgrunn is for you.
