Get an in-depth insight into the history and culture of Petra to assist in appreciating the World Heritage Area that lies beyond its doors.

The Petra Visitor Center functions as both the entrance and the museum for the historical complex of Petra. It’s also the booking center for guided tours and horse-and-carriage rides. Get familiar with the history and culture of one of Jordan’s oldest peoples, the Nabateans, and learn how they survived in this harsh natural environment.

Famous all over the world for its amazing decor, Petra is a unique combination of sandstone buildings carved into the rock face of steep canyons set in a dramatic, deserted landscape. Before you set out exploring, allow yourself enough time to visit the museum of the Petra Visitor Center.

The modern complex was opened in 2014 by Jordan’s King Abdullah II. The museum has five rooms, each with a different theme to help explain the complexity of Petra’s history. The displays provide a valuable insight into many aspects of Petra, preparing you for what is to come.

The Nabateans built Petra as their capital, the trading hub of their empire. You’ll discover how they used sophisticated water management to tame their desert surroundings. Dating back more than 2,000 years, some of the artifacts on display are true treasures.

You’ll be surprised to learn about contemporary culture as well. Recently Petra has gained notoriety for acting as the dazzling backdrop for epic movies and TV shows.

Pay for a guide to assist you in your discovery of the sprawling Petra complex or pick up a brochure with a map and set out on your own. You can even book a horse-and-carriage ride, for a more relaxing way to see the many wonders of Petra.

The Petra Visitor Center is open daily and is located on the edge of the town of Wadi Musa. The center in the lower valley is best reached on foot or by taxi. Entry to the museum is included in the entry fee to the Petra complex.
