We travel around Japan and have been living in many similar styled ryokans and rarely run into such disappointments. The hotel obviously has dinner option. But neither Expedia nor the hotel provide proper communication for such option. I wished they had air condition in the common aisle area as the weather can get very hot (the room, kitchen area had good air conditioning).
