Neuchatel Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Neuchatel
Browse the medieval Old Town, stroll along the lakeshore or take a funicular ride to fully appreciate the stunning setting of this ancient Swiss city.

Neuchâtel is perched beside the lake that shares its name, with the Jura Mountains rising behind it. These natural wonders combined with the charm and history of the Old Town give Neuchâtel a unique beauty and atmosphere.

Begin your exploration of Neuchâtel with a stroll through the maze-like streets of the Old Town. Going back to the year 1011, the city’s medieval buildings and cobbled streets ooze history and grandeur. Place Pury marks the start of the pedestrian zone. It’s also a central point for transportation links and a good place to meet for drinks on a terrace.

Climb up to the Château du Neuchâtel, the elegant castle sitting on a small hill near the center of the Old Town. Take a tour of the stately building that is still home to the government offices of the Neuchâtel Canton and peer out over the city’s red roofs. Next door, admire the Gothic Collegiate Church and look for the cenotaph honoring the Counts of Neuchâtel.

Head down to the lakeshore for a stroll along the promenade of Lac de Neuchâtel (Neuchâtel Lake). Pleasant sandy beaches offer a chance for a summer swim or a quiet moment in the sun. Try one of the waterfront cafés for a bite to eat with lake views framed by the Alps in the distance.

Discover just how fascinating natural history can be with a visit to the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle (Natural History Museum). Well-presented displays and interactive activities provide lots of fun for the whole family. Also visit the fascinating Musee d'Art et d'Histoire (Museum of Art and History). Along with the beautiful building and displays, a highlight is the eerie automaton display of a human-like robot.

Hop aboard the funicular at La Coudre station to get to Chaumont, a peak just behind the city. Once at the top, walk out along the narrow bridge to the tower. Gaze out from this 3,805-foot (1,160-meter) high vantage point for panoramic vistas of the Trois-Lacs (Three Lakes) and, on a clear day, the Mont Blanc range of the Swiss Alps.

With its exciting mix of art, nature, culture, history and natural wonders, Neuchâtel ticks many boxes. Your only dilemma during your visit will be deciding which box of delights to open next.

"The place is super convenient in the middle of town in the pedestrian only zone. This does not mean it is quiet... The building was not well insulated from noise - on weekends pedestrian noise can be rather loud."
