Visit a town near the outer Himalayas that is known as the Lake District of India, and explore its lakes, temples and caves.
Nainital is situated in a forested valley around a large volcanic lake. Surrounded by mountains, and with a cluster of lakes in the area, the hill town excites with its rich scenic beauty. From the higher peaks, you can see the snowy central range of the Himalayas. Travel through the wilderness, visit temples and explore a cave complex.
The crescent-shaped Nainital Lake is the town's main feature. The surface of this beautiful freshwater lake reflects the landscape. Get out on the water in a yacht or a rowing or peddle boat. Wander by the shoreline and walk across the lake bridge that has shops and a post office.
At the northern end of the lake is Naina Devi Temple. According to Hindu legend, this is one of the places where body parts of the goddess Sati fell to save the Earth from Shiva’s anger. Tour the hilltop shrine and see numerous idols to Hindu gods. Venture into the cave complex at Eco Cave Park, also at the lake's northern end. There are six caves to investigate and all are named after animals.
Explore the hills around Nainital. Hike to Tiffin Top or if you’re feeling really energetic, trek up to Naina Peak. At an altitude of 8,579 feet (2,615 metres) this is the highest point in the region. Take the cable car to Snow View, situated on top of the Sher-ka-danda Hill. From this vantage point, you can enjoy excellent views of the snowy Himalayas. Stay on the hill to visit Pt. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo that houses endemic and endangered species. See Tibetan wolves, Siberian tigers, eagles, Himalayan black bears and many other mammals and birds.
The best way to reach Nainital is by bus or car. Buses run to and from New Delhi several times a day. The drive from the capital city takes about 7 hours. The nearest domestic airport is in Pantnagar, about 34 miles (55 kilometres) away. Many visitors choose to tour Nainital’s splendid scenery on foot or by cycle rickshaw.
