Barton Bridge, a swing bridge carrying Barton Road over the Manchester Ship Canal, turning open to allow a waiting ship to pass. In the background is the Barton Aqueduct, which is also a swing bridge, and at the time of the photo had already turned fully open in readiness for the ship. This view is from the southwest. Additional information from the photographer's original post to Flickr: The aqueduct was shifted about fifteen minutes before the road bridge meaning it's easy to catch both operations. This is from the only decent vantage point on the canal side just off the Old Barton Road (which provides decent parking for anyone driving to view the mechanical marvels). The road bridge is opened "just in time" for any passing ships.
