Having planned a trip to see Chartwell House in Kent and Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire, we knew we would need an overnight stopover. We wanted somewhere near Bletchley Park and eventually plumped for the Axe & Compass. What a find! As we drove into the car park, we were not sure we had done right, the car park was full of tradesmen’s vehicles. We walked into the bar near the car park to register and it was full of workmen relaxing, very noisy but full of banter. The person behind the bar gave us the key to the room and told us what was available and that our continental breakfast is in the fridge. Food was available in the restaurant in the evening. The room was compact but comfortable and clean. The shower could do with some TLC to get rid of the mould, but it worked well.
Requiring dinner, we quickly looked around the village to see what else was available but as there was nothing, we entered the restaurant at the Axe & Compass and checked out the menu, which had many choices. We made our selection and settled down to wait for it. After about 30-40 minutes our meals turned up, chicken curry and steak pie and chips. Both dishes were hot and plentiful. My wife had the chicken curry and she informed me that she was eating, yet the rice didn’t seem to be going down. In the end, she ate all the chicken and left about half of the rice. The steak pie came in it’s own dish with a puff pastry hat, to me that is not a pie. It was delicious though. Hope to be back in the future.
