First impression of the hotel at check-in was exceptional- Stephen was very welcoming and friendly, and we knew it was going to be an incredible stay! In fact, encounters with the staff from bartender, restaurant and housekeeping were all friendly, engaging, and positive.
The location was serene and relaxing with incredible 360-degree views of mountains and pastures! Inside, there were several cozy areas to relax and unwind. I would also recommend booking a dinner reservation for fine dining as the food was incredible (2AA Rosette) and the ambience as well, with large windows to enjoy the surroundings!
Highly recommend this hotel! (Party of 5)
The hotel staff were very friendly. The room was comfortable in a beautiful setting. There is easy access to footpaths in the area and several options for getting around. The restaurant food was outstanding except for one meal, they ran out of game hem and replaced it with chicken, and the chicken was dry. Otherwise it would be nice to have some pillow options, with both foam and feather available. Overall it was excellent and I highly recommend it. Hoping we can go there again in the future.
Pretty remote so if you’re out driving, make sure you become familiar with the (fairly convenient) bus schedule, although it’s a half mile from the bus stop, or be prepared to pay a healthy taxi/Uber fare from Keswick. The grounds are lovely and rooms/common areas well-maintained. Breakfast doesn’t start until 0745, very inconvenient for an early start. Staff could be a little more helpful in pointing out bus schedule, local attractions, arranging cabs, etc. a nice experience overall.
Our room, on the first floor, was excellent with lovely views. The food was of a high quality and the service was very good except on one of our three evenings when we were forgotten about and it took at least three complaints to get our meal started. On this occasion we were in the restaurant for about two hours and it took 45 minutes before we got our starter. This was a shame because otherwise everything was perfect.
The property is very nice, quiet surroundings and the perfect view you will expect from a hotel this price. The food is above expectation with a totally different menu 2 nights of stay. A final point that the staff are amazing particularly April and Poppy, fantastic waitresses who care for their guests dinner, stay and well being.
Great food at both breakfast and evening meal, friendly staff, great views & recently decorated.
However staff on the phone weren’t very helpful when I accidentally booked the wrong rate, and it took quite a while to amend despite ringing up immediately. We were also staying in room 2, which was lovely but a lot smaller than the photos and was a bit small for 2 adults. Coffee’s were also charged extra at breakfast which wasn’t made clear.
A wonderful stay at a very special hotel. The room was perfect, the food was lovely and all of the staff couldn't have been more helpful. And, let's not forget the magnificent surroundings. Thank you
John

The overall cleanliness of the hotel & the service was wonderful with the exception of a grumpy woman behind the bar her service was awful, she didn’t even come to take my order for lunch I waited 40minutes I even had to go & ask & order it myself up at the bar, it wasn’t even busy.
She wasn’t very helpful it was as though she didn’t like the job! Her approach to customers wasn’t great really to be honest.
But I certainly give 5 stars to all the other staff in the restaurant & especially the lady at reception. Thank you to those staff that made up for the grumpy one with glasses.
The Borrowdale Gates is a total gem. It exceeded our expectations. The staff are professional and accommodating. The breakfasts were great and we dined in all 4 nights - a first for us - largely because the cuisine and attention to detail was superb. AND the view from the dining room was breathtaking.
We had a great break at Borrowdale Gates. the place is o peaceful and the views are immense!! Even had a red squirrel pop up onto the window ledge while we had our breakfast yesterday. We will return again soon.
Beautiful scenic location. Hotel condition and all furnishing as new. Room extremely comfortable. Staff impeccable, not to be faulted. Food superb. Bar prices high. Lounge a bit bright…. Need table lamps rather than ceiling lights to give better ambience. Overall excellent.
I've never been to the lake district before. This girl is a converted manor house, with much of the elegance from earlier times, combined with a unique combination of comfortable amenities and mid-century decor. And the surrounding area was transcendent. I could see me living there I've I retire
Fabulous refurbished hotel, very modern but in a traditional way given its location. We had a garden suite (Millican Dalton) which was an absolute delight, very spacious and quiet, views over fields & hills. The only fault, although minor was there is no fridge in the room and there is a patio area with table & chairs with view to the hills but it hadn’t been cleaned for sometime, lots of moss & quite slippy.
We had dinner in the restaurant both nights & the food quality was very good & presented beautifully. Great breakfast menu.
All the staff were very attentive, friendly and went out of their way to make the stay enjoyable.
The plus point for us is that they only have a couple of rooms for dogs & dogs are not allowed in the bar or restaurant.
Don’t get me wrong, I like dogs, but I don’t want to stay in a room where they have been & I certainly don’t want to eat in a restaurant with them when most guests are dressed for dinner & unfortunately have seen dogs jump up at staff when they are trying to serve food.
