Kaiserslautern is a diverse tourist destination. With a strong military history and a standout art scene, this German city offers a variety of unique activities.

Tucked into the southwestern edge of Germany, Kaiserslautern is a city that blends traditional values and modernity into one metropolis. Often referred to as “K-Town,” this place holds over two millennia of rich history. It is also significant in modern times, gaining prominence as a military base during the Cold War and playing host to the 2006 World Cup.

Home to less than 100,000 people, it is often easy to forget that Kaiserslautern is indeed a metropolis. It is located next to the Palatinate Forest. Just ten minutes away from the city, this expansive natural area is a beacon for hikers and campers. Kaiserslautern is an accessible urban centre in this wilderness region.

While here, be sure to explore the rich architectural history that Kaiserslautern possesses. Both Burg Nanstein, a twelfth-century castle, and the medieval St. Martin’s Church are not to be missed. The Old Town holds many distinctive buildings and also has an exciting nightlife.

Feast your eyes on both animated and still-life subjects at Kaiserslautern Zoo and Palatinate Gallery of Art. The recently reopened Arts and Cultural Centre gives visitors the opportunity to explore the local art scene. Both St. Martin’s Square, a famed marketplace, and the Japanese Garden provide respite from the energetic spirit that defines much of the city. The Gartenschau is a stunning botanical exhibition that showcases stunning plants, not to mention the largest dinosaur collection in Europe.

Whether you love hiking, biking or sports, fine dining or fine art, this city ensures that your stay will be packed with things to do. It has something to offer tourists throughout the year. During the summer, the city’s colourful flowers blossom through the metropolis’ borders during the winter, ski resorts come out of hibernation in the nearby mountains.

Under two hours from both Frankfurt and Luxembourg, this city is a central stop during any European tour. Kaiserslautern is easily accessible by airplane, car or train.

Hotel located near the KL main train station and other restaurants in the downtown area. I enjoyed my stay, however my room faced the DB train tracks and I couldn’t keep my windows open during the night and I didn’t deem the AC worthwhile to keep on due to the humming noise it created. Moreover, ...
