"The staff here are the absolute best. Through a mistake all of my cash, in an envelope, was thrown away. I approached the staff asking if they had seen it, clearly I was panicking. They helped tear our room apart to look for it. When that resulted in nothing, they waited with us for the cleaning crew, who then dug through the trash to find the bag from our specific room. Inside was all my money still in a sealed envelope. I will be forever grateful for all the effort they went through to help me."

"We loved the staff and hospitality at Momijiya. My husband said it felt like we were staying at our grandma's house. We loved the ryokan experience as well. We really felt we were getting a more intimate Japanese experience. The food really put us Americans out of our comfort zone, but we wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Our rooms were quaint with nice view, and the comforters on our futons were incredible comfortable. Like sleeping inside a warm cloud. This is a great spot to feel like you're escaping to the mountains but still getting to explore Kyoto during the day."

"This may be my very favorite hotel of all time. And I only say may to allow for the fact that I may be forgetting something. I can’t imagine, forgetting this. From the moment we arrived from the train station to the moment we sadly departed, every detail was thought of and accounted for. The staff are helpful and discreet, responding to every request as though we had simply asked them the time. This is the only unobtrusive turndown service I’ve ever experienced. . From calling taxis to arranging a Kintsugi experience, to deftly navigating a request to help retrieve some items left in a Tokyo hotel room, everything was absolutely seamless. . Bed was huge and comfortable, pajamas and robes lush, toilet, separate from the shower and private, and an in-room onsen built for two. . The pool is warm and mineral-fed, the grounds are breathtaking, and walking distance to Kinkakuji and some delicious sushi. . If I were forced to make a note, it would be that the Western items on the à la carte breakfast menu were not my favorite. But the buffet was great. . I would come back to Kyoto just to stay here."

While the inn is clearly old, it is immaculately maintained, showcasing a rich history without sacrificing comfort. The location is simply magical. Tucked away from the tourist hustle, the atmosphere is serene, quiet, and peaceful. We truly felt like we were staying in the forest. The property itself is a destination, featuring a gorgeous walking trail that leads along the river and a small path up to a lovely shrine—perfect for a morning hike. Visiting in October meant very few other tourists, making it feel like we had this pocket of nature all to ourselves. The staff are the heart of this place. They are not just excellent; they are caring and incredibly attentive. Their dedication to an excellent guest experience is evident in every detail. They even generously provided a complementary pickup from a local bus stop when we arrived and offer a convenient shuttle service to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and the train station for ongoing travel. Speaking of special touches, the complementary breakfast is a highlight—a beautifully presented and delicious cultural experience you won't forget. A special shout-out to Hiroko Hitomi, who runs this establishment. She truly embodies the spirit of Japanese hospitality, ensuring every guest feels genuinely welcome and special. We highly recommend this Ryokan for a peaceful and authentic stay. "
