Immerse yourself in the world of Jane Austen at this museum or relax in the tea room as her famous characters often did.
You’ll know the Jane Austen Centre when you see it, as there’s a mannequin of the author herself standing outside the elaborate stone doorway. See the exhibits on Austen’s life and works and dress up in period clothing for a photograph. Relax with afternoon tea in the Regency Tea Rooms and take one of the walking tours around Bath.
Head into the exhibition area and talk to the staff, who are dressed in full regency costume as Jane Austen characters. Exhibits explore a variety of topics; learn about Austen’s life in Bath and the places where she lived, her family and the society she lived in. Try on a historical costume and pose for a photo. The staff will be happy to show you the correct way to wear the costumes and will take your picture with your own camera.
Enjoy a cup of tea in the Regency Tea Rooms, which has won the “Award of Excellence” from the Tea Guild. Choose from a wide variety of teas from around the world or try a crumpet or a slice of cake. Bask in the luxury of the beautiful regency décor by ordering a themed lunch, such as a champagne tea. If you’d like a china tea set of your own, purchase one in the gift shop, along with a range of books, cards and stationery.
Visit in September for the Jane Austen Festival, a 10-day celebration with regency-themed events around Bath. The center runs a number of these. See costume promenades, dramatic readings and even dance at a masquerade ball. The events do change each year, so check the official festival website to see what’s on this year.
The Jane Austen Centre is located in Bath’s city center, making it easily accessible from the local train and bus stations. Refer to the center's website for information on opening days and times. Concessions are available on the admission price. Purchase a ticket for the exhibits. Visit the tea rooms with or without access to the exhibits.
