"We were up in Newcastle to drop out daughter back to Uni, and rooms in Newcastle were at a premium due to the Great North Run. So we looked further out and found the Portland. Easy to find just off the main road from Newcastle. The hotel has its own onsite parking which is easy to find with plenty of spaces and costs ยฃ10 per night. We had to be back in Newcastle to see the start of the run so did not have time for breakfast (ยฃ15 continental, or ยฃ20 per person cooked breakfast). If you drive an EV there are Instavolt rapid chargers at the McDonalds nearby and others at the Ashington station requiring your own cable. Comfortable nights stay, thank you"

"One of the quirkiest places I've stayed in so far this year. It is close to the A1 thus road noise, especially on hot evenings was noticeable, if a light sleeper perhaps not the best choice, Breakfast was good, and it is most convenient for visiting the area."

"the lift was out of order, I have mobility issues so this was a big problem for me, our accommodation was on the second floor so there were lots of stairs. we didn't find the reception staff particularly friendly. The breakfast staff were really nice and helpful, also the breakfast was very good"

"We loved our stay in one of the lakeside cabins, the view was great and the room was very clean. Breakfast was perfect, coffees were great and the staff were very pleasant attentive to us throughout our stay. The evening menu looked lovely so Iโd love to come back to the hotel to try the food on a night. We had some cocktails in the bar area once we returned from our meal and they had a perfect variety of classics and signatures so we loved testing a few of these. The girl on the bar was very helpful and friendly, gave great recommendations. Our only negative was the hot water - in the cabins we filled the bath for 20 mins as it says, then when we topped it up there seemed to be no more hot water left after running it for longer which was unfortunate but of course this didnโt ruin our stay as we still thoroughly enjoyed."

"Staff totally dedicated to ensuring the best guest experience. Annemarie was a credit to the place. It was lovely to chat with the owner over breakfast. Both the hospitality tray and breakfast put many other establishments' offerings to shame. The view from room 8 was lovely. We will definitely return. Thank you"

"The property is being renovated, nearly finished downstairs and very nice. The staff are very good, friendly and helpful. Wi fi is good. Dinner and breakfast is fine and served without a long wait.We would stay again, as it is central and has a nice beer garden, which would be very nice in hot weather. Thank you Dusty and Allan."
