Situated in the far north of Norway, Hasvik offers relaxation, magnificent scenery and a rich history.
A holiday in Hasvik allows you to experience fun festivals, as well as lots of wartime history. You’ll also find breathtaking scenery, several nature reserves and the option of participating in various leisure activities. You can also climb Mount Kjerringa, the highest mountain in the municipality.
The municipality of Hasvik is situated in Finnmark and has a population of just over 1,000. The municipality comprises the western part of Sørøya and some of Stjernøya, with the village of Hasvik situated to the very south of Sørøya. The municipality also includes the Sandvika recreation area, which boasts a magnificent beach. On Sørøya, you will also find the remnants of some of the oldest settlements in Norway, showing how the island has changed over 11,000 years.
Alternatively, why not visit the oldest building in the municipality, Dønnesfjord Church? Don’t forget to also visit Kvithellshula, a small cave in which 35 people lived for an entire winter during the Second World War. The Fortress in Håen is also worth a visit – a place where you can really get an idea of the vast German presence in the area during the war. The area also boasts multiple nature reserves, including Storgalten and Andotten.
Hasvik is situated next to the sea in the north of the country. You can experience some of the most extreme weather conditions here, with the midnight sun shining in summer and the Northern Lights dancing across the sky in winter. If you’re feeling adventurous, having access to a hire car is a great idea if you wish to move around the area at your own pace.
Hasvik has its own airport, with national flights to Tromsø and other national destinations. If you are flying from Oslo to Hasvik, expect a flight time of around three hours. There is also a speedboat connection to Alta and Hammerfest and a car ferry to Øksfjord on the mainland.
