Tourist Guide
Alta showing a small town or village
Alta is one of our northernmost towns and is the perfect place to experience Norwegian nature and mountain plateaus. You also get to experience city life and culture!

A trip to Alta is a trip to the kingdom of northern lights and the midnight sun. These are attractions that people travel across the world to experience! Alta is known as the town of Northern Lights and even has its own northern lights observatory. Summer or winter, Finnmarksvidda (the Finnmark plateau) – is completely unique. You can snap unforgettable pictures and go for long hikes.

In the summer, you can explore the plateau on a quad bike, while in the winter, you can go cross-country skiing, or travel by snowmobile or dog sled. Maybe you'll even spend the night in a traditional lavvu tepee-like tent, and get an insight into Sami culture and reindeer herding? The possibilities are endless in Alta.

When it comes to culture, Alta also has a lot to offer. Don't miss Northern Europe's largest rock art site, the Alta Museum which boasts stunning views of Altafjord. At the Alta Museum, a World Heritage Site for rock art, you can get a deeper understanding of the history surrounding the rock carvings and Alta.

Explore the modern culture offerings in the city. Alta is a very lively town, thanks in large part to the Høgskolen i Finnmark (Finnmark University College. The town has a lot of lively bars where you can catch some live entertainment, especially City Scene, which is known for attracting famous artists.

If you're looking for a different hotel experience, you've come to the right place. Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel is – as the name suggests – made of ice and snow. Everything from the beds to the glasses in the bar is made of ice. With a snowsuit, lots of reindeer skins, a sauna and hot toddies served in bed, you will keep warm anyway. Every year, famous ice sculptors come to the hotel to decorate it, which makes it look even more special. It's the perfect start for a romantic weekend getaway in Alta.

Alta is a unique combination of city life and otherworldly nature experiences. If you still haven't been, what are you waiting for?

Comfortable stay
"This is a nice hotel. It is quiet and comfortable. I don't have any complaints, however there wasn't anything that wowed me either. The room was a little noisy, but I was right by the elevator, so that was part of the issue."
