Follow the peak of the clock tower to the heart of this quaint village, which provides long days of winter skiing and dreamy summer wanderings.
Find Gryon on the slopes of Mont Jorogne, not far from Villars. The two villages face south to the sunshine from the middle of the Vaud Alps. Travel easily between the two and their associated ski resort, Villars-Gryon.
Ride the alpine railway to reach the vast ski fields, offering 78 miles (125 kilometers) of slopes, including 27 miles (44 kilometers) of cross-country, winter hiking and sledding trails. Venture over Le Meilleret to the Les Diablerets glacier at 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) of elevation. Bring the kids to play at the snow kindergarten.
In summer, pick up the Free Access Card, which allows use of all mountain transportation. Local people have been herding cattle in these hills for centuries and making delicious cheese. Learn about the traditional methods by visiting a cheese factory. Browse crafts from local artisans and delicacies from local farmers at the workshop La Maison du Terroir.
Around the small village of Taveyanne find a nature reserve with classic chalets. Hike here easily from the center of Gryon. In summer, roam the bright green hills on foot or mountain bike. The sun and fresh mountain air will leave you refreshed. Walk narrow streets winding between wooden chalets overlooking the quaint valley. Visit the parish church, rest under the linden tree and admire the village’s fountain.
The fresh waters of nearby Lake Chavonnes have inspired many folk legends of the Alps over the centuries. One story tells of a white lake monster and a fair maiden who threw her jewelry box into the water. While swimming or walking near the lake’s edge, look into the depths and see these “diamonds” sparkling on the lake bottom. They are actually natural rock decorated with pieces of luminous pyrite.
In summer, Gryon is surrounded by lush pastures. Flowers bloom on chalet balconies. Reach the area easily by car from Geneva, Montreux-Vevey or Lausanne. Alternatively, travel by rail. Switch trains at Aigle to get a local train to Gryon.
