Grasten Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Grasten
Visit the royal Gråsten Slot, sample the legendary local afternoon coffee and cake, and love the safe, sandy beaches and stunning scenery of Als.

Gråsten is a charming town in southern Jutland nestling in a stunning coastal landscape. A visit to the town’s biggest tourist attraction, the royal residence Gråsten Slot, is a must. The house has massive historical importance, and is still used by the royal family as an official summer residence. Don’t miss Sønderborg Slot, evidence of the history of southern Jutland and Schleswig from the Middle Ages to modern day.

Come to Gråsten to enjoy a charming town centre surrounded by lush countryside. Take a bike ride, walk or even a ride in a horse-drawn carriage through Gråstenskovene. Sailing on Flensborg Fjord is also highly recommended. Spread out your beach towel on the safe, sandy beach at Alnor Strandpark, or the wonderful beaches of Als.

Southern Jutland’s history is an exciting and important chapter in Denmark’s story, and inspired Ole Bornedal’s acclaimed TV drama “1864”. If you’d like to know more about this disputed border region, visit Dybbøl Mølle and Historiecenter Dybbøl Banke, museums and exhibitions that bring to life one of the most important battles in the country’s history.

A trip to Gråsten is more than just history. Sample the gastronomic delights of the famous local coffee and cake, gaze at the stars in the ORION Planetarium, see the KC Regatta of stately sailing ships in late August or visit Papirmuseets By at Gråsten, an 800 m2 indoor miniature town. If you bring the kids to Gråsten, be sure to visit the fun Danfoss Universe on Als, or have a good splash at the huge Marina Fiskenæs Vandland. There are luxurious whirlpool baths here with views of the sea, and an indoor spa for grown-ups. If you need a touch of the big city during your stay in Gråsten, take a trip over the border into Germany to visit charming Flensburg.

Kids get lots of discounts with a Be Happy Pass. Another tip is to visit the Historiecenter Dybbøl Banke, which puts on lifelike storytelling sessions about the 1864 war during the winter months.

Take a holiday in Gråsten for an abundance of sea, history and exciting activities for the whole family. There are things to do here all year round – and always something new to discover.
