About the Golden Triangle

Thailand’s so-called Golden Triangle marks a river confluence at the centre of a historic opium-producing region. The poppies are long gone, yet the Golden Triangle is one of the most visited attractions in northern Thailand. Hotels built on the hillside above the Thai side of the Mekong River offer panoramic views across to Laos.

Don’t Miss

A golden Buddha aboard a treasure ship is the Golden Triangle’s most renowned sight. Taking a selfie with this as a backdrop is an absolute must. A cruise on the Mekong comes a close second. One of the cruise options gives the chance of visiting Don Sao, a Lao island. Phra That Doi Pu Khao is a hilltop pagoda believed to be more than 1,200 years old.

The Hall of Opium and the House of Opium are two interesting facilities that explore the history of the drug with illuminating displays, photographs and exhibits. The road following the banks of the Mekong through the Golden Triangle goes to Chiang Saen in one direction and Mae Sai in the other. These two locations are usually included in one tour package for daytrippers. People staying overnight at the Golden Triangle can explore the area at a pace that suits them.

Restaurants and Bars

There is no shortage of places to eat when touring the Golden Triangle. A string of bamboo huts perches above the riverside. Appearances can be misleading and these huts serve up a tasty selection of rice and noodle dishes. Some have giant Mekong catfish on their menus. People looking for more style and comfort will find a few venues especially in hotels and resorts close to the riverside.

Shopping

The Golden Triangle boasts a full range of keepsakes and clothing. A Golden Triangle T-shirt is a lively reminder of your trip. Opium weights and souvenirs also make great mementos. Brightly coloured cloth bags and cushions, hilltribe headwear, Buddha statues cast from assorted materials and varnished wooden plates are just a taste of the articles awaiting visitors.
