The largest city on Japan’s Kyushu island, surrounded on three sides by mountains and the fourth by the Sea of Genkai, is a truly modern city centre. Fukuoka used to be two cities, with the division still clear, though it is easy to get around and see the sites. In addition to modern structures, the city has plenty of historical sites, beautiful parks and museums to attract visitors.
To really get a feel for Fukuoka and its way of life you will need at least five days here, wandering around both sides of the river, namely Hakata and Tenjin.
For a modern experience of Fukuoka, stay on the west side of the river and visit the 234-metre high Fukuoka Tower and the massive Ferris Wheel Sky Dream Fukuoka, then go to Kego Park to watch the youth culture go about their life.
If you are into history and culture visit these: Gion area and its numerous historical shrines and Buddhist temples, the traditional Yusentei Park, Hakozaki Shrine and Ohori Park, which is home to several art galleries.
If you love the outdoors try these: walking in Nishi Park, hiking and camping on the nearby island of Nokonoshima or cycling around the city. Surfers make the trip to Nijinohama in the summer months, while another great day trip is to the numerous hot springs in Beppu.
Restaurants and Bars
Fukuoka is famous for its ramen (noodle soup) and yatai (streets stalls) can be found selling it all over the city, particularly in Tenjin near the post office and in Hakata along the riverfront. Wander around the Nakasu area where there are over 3,500 restaurants that serve not only local fare but also international cuisine. The trendy Daimyo area is a great place to drink with expats, while Tenzin is filled with Japanese style pubs. For extremely late night drinking, check out the bars along Oyafuko-dori Avenue.
The trendiest place to shop is in Daimyo, which is home to numerous Japanese boutiques. Still, Tenjin is the shopping capital of the city, where you will find designer labels, large department stores and shopping arcades. For traditional Japanese goods, head to the Nakasu Kawabata shopping arcade.
