Sachsenhausen Nord Travel Guide

Frankfurt

A cityscape with modern skyscrapers and a river with autumn foliage.
A cobblestone street with outdoor seating, a beer garden, and traditional European architecture.
A street with red and yellow buildings, green trees, and a flower garden.
A river with a city skyline in the background, featuring modern buildings and a prominent tower.
A street with autumn trees, parked cars, and a mural on a building.
Climb a tower, browse world-class museums and eat and drink well into the night in this pretty district south of the Main River.

Walk the cobblestone streets of Sachsenhausen, the area of Frankfurt south of the Main River. The pretty neighbourhood is filled with museums, bars and restaurants. Wander through art galleries, shop in boutiques, sample local culinary specialties and dance through the night. The architecture in Sachsenhausen is made up mostly of typical German half-timbered houses, making this one of the prettiest areas in the city.

Cross the Eiserner Steg bridge after a day of sightseeing in the Old Town and head straight for Affentorplatz. This area in the northeast of Sachsenhausen is made up of cobblestone alleyways lined with bars and restaurants. During summer, tables full of diners spill out into the streets and the area has a party atmosphere. Join locals for a drink of apple wine.

The Museumsufer (Museum Embankment) lies along the Main River in the far north of Sachsenhausen. Visit some of the best cultural institutions in the city, including the German Architecture Museum and the Städel, which houses fine art. If your interests are more niche, you might enjoy the Museum for Communication, which houses telephones and stamp collections. See the Icon Museum, which displays religious icons from the 16th to 20th centuries.

Look out over Sachsenhausen and across the river to the Old Town from the top of the Goetheturm (Goethe Tower). The tower can be found in a forest that lies on the edge of farmland in the south of the district. A viewing platform at the top of the 43-metre (141-foot) tower can only be accessed by a long flight of stairs, so wear comfortable shoes. Gaze across forests and farmland on one side and city skyscrapers on the other. The tower is free to climb.

Sachsenhausen encompasses a large area of the city. Get around easily using the U-Bahn and S-Bahn.
