Franciscan Church of the Annunciation

Franciscan Church of the Annunciation featuring a church or cathedral and a sunset
Discover an interior decorated with art by local and Italian artists at this Baroque-style church that overlooks Ljubljana’s main square.

The Franciscan Church of the Annunciation (Frančiškanska cerkev) is a magnificent Baroque landmark with impressive architectural features and elegant interior designs. Augustinian monks built the church during the mid-1600s. Toward the end of the 18th century, Franciscan monks occupied the church and added to its appearance. Note that today’s Franciscan Church of the Annunciation is the result of renovations following an earthquake in 1895.

Position yourself at the base of the church’s steps to enjoy a front view of its orange-red façade. Spot onion-shaped spires, which stand atop the bell towers. Look for a large copper statue of Our Lady of Loretto (also called Madonna and Child) in addition to figurines of gods and angels.

Inside, the church has a traditional Baroque plan with one central nave flanked by chapels. Take a moment to admire the main altar, carved by the Italian sculptor Francesco Robba. To one side of the altar is an eerie glass tomb that holds the relics of St. Deodatus. Look for frescoes by the 19th-century Slovene painter Matevž Langus and the impressionist artist Matej Sternen.

The Franciscan Church of the Annunciation is open daily and admission is free. It’s an active church so be respectful of worshippers when visiting. A Mass in English takes place every hour during the morning.

The church is the dominating feature of Prešernov Square, which is Ljubljana’s central square and a frequent venue for concerts and festivals. It’s about a 5-minute walk from either Congress Square or Dragon Bridge. While here, appreciate the square’s other architectural landmarks, such as the art nouveau-style Urbanc House, Ljubljana’s oldest department store, now filled with high-end fashion. Check out the Prešernov Monument, a statue that depicts the acclaimed Slovene poet France Prešernov.

Streets lead in all directions from Franciscan Church of the Annunciation to different areas of the city. Cross the interesting Triple Bridge to the south and explore Ljubljana’s Old Town. Visit the Town Hall and Cathedral of St. Nicholas. Walk or ride the funicular up Castle Hill and tour the medieval Ljubljana Castle.
