Düsseldorf Old Town Travel Guide

Düsseldorf
Düsseldorf Old Town
Try the Old Beer at one of the many pubs, stroll along the riverside and visit the range of museums in Duesseldorf’s historic nucleus.

The Old Town of Duesseldorf is packed with fascinating structures and scenic views. Alongside the architectural treasures lie sophisticated cocktail lounges and rustic pubs serving German beers. Wander through the narrow alleys and visit the museums and galleries for a glimpse of the local culture.

Browse the modern works of art that line the walls of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, which contains pieces by Picasso and Matisse, among others. Inspect the displays of the Filmmuseum for its movie memorabilia. One of the area’s highlights is the Rhein Opera House. See a dramatic performance in the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus theater and listen to the sweet melodies of a classical orchestra in the Tonhalle Concert Hall.

The cityscape is also made up of the tall spires of churches. Admire the complex façade and twisting spire of the 13th-century St. Lambert Basilica. Gaze up at the spectacular Rhine Tower, which rises high above its namesake river. Ride its elevator up to the viewing platform to see all of Duesseldorf from above.

A little north along the waterside is the Schlossturm, a tower from a burned-down castle. Inspect the exhibits in the tower’s museum, with information on the shipping history of the region.

Dine and drink in one of the 260 pubs that adorn this relatively small riverside district. Chat with the traditional Köbes waiters, who are renowned for their excellent service and knowledge. The city is famous for its Altbier (Old Beer), which is brewed from a traditional recipe.

Note that the German name for the district is the Altstadt. The Old Town occupies the eastern flank of the Rhine River in the central portion of Duesseldorf. Take the U-Bahn public transportation system to Heinrich Heine Allee and get around this quaint district on foot. Visit nearby sights, including the Königsallee Düsseldorf, the Schwanenmarkt and Apollowiese State Park.
