Site of former Diggle station, 1996. View westward from above the western portals of the Standedge Tunnels near Saddleworth, on the main ex-LNWR Manchester - Stalybridge - Huddersfield - Leeds line. The track-bed on the left had been for the Slow lines, which went into the two earlier single-line tunnels until 31/10/66, although the Micklehurst Loop from Stalybridge was closed 7/9/64: the remaining double track runs through the 1894 tunnel. The Canal Tunnel, recently restored, is on the far side. Diggle station was closed 7/10/68. The hill on the horizon topped with a mast is Wharmton - west of Uppermill.

Western portal of Standedge Tunnel at Diggle. View NE from the A62 road, towards Huddersfield, Leeds etc.: ex-LNWR Manchester - Huddersfield - Leeds main line. Behind the camera is the site of the former Diggle station - see SE0008 : Site of former Diggle station, 1996. There are four tunnels here: the two tracks remaining constitute the main line, through the most recent (1894) tunnel bore, next to the right the original (1811) canal tunnel runs underneath here. Further over to the right are the original (1848 and 1871) single-line rail tunnels, still extant but with no track although one is available for emergency road vehicles.

Diggle Junction signalbox 1981 Diggle was where the passenger and goods line from Standedge Tunnel exchanged tracks and then separated to opposite sides of the valley for the run to Stalybridge. The train in the distance is about to enter the tunnel, en route to Leeds.

The room was very clean and comfortable, and the shower and bathroom facilities were exceptional. The only minor negative was that I could hear the building's air-con/heating system all night which was very loud. I did not mention it as I was only staying for one night
