We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Ootaki and would definitely return. The hotel is very traditional and gives you a real insight into traditional Japanese culture. Although the staff had limited English, this was not a problem for us and they were incredibly welcoming and helpful. The hotel has lots of freebies as part of their service including combs, hairbrushes, shower caps, razors etc. The onsen was very relaxing and the hotel was clean.

The check-in was a bit confusing because we didn't know they are open from 4PM. Other than that, everything else was great. Very nice hosts and there is a nice bakery very close to the hotel. Whenever you are visiting Nikko beware the shops/restaurants and cafes close around 5-6PM.

Negative - From what i could tell there was only 1 male toilet for the dorm, meaning waiting to be able to use and then trying to rush because your occupying the only toilet, also a slight gap in the door so you felt a little exposed!. Positive- everything else really, beautiful area really convenient for the lakes/hiking, not far from the main town, great lounge area upstairs with complimentary alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks/snacks as well as places to relax, table tennis etc, dorm beds...
