Indulge your creative side at this free art gallery, home to a wide range of fascinating and eye-catching works.

Once the site of the Wellington Public Library, this striking Art Deco style building with its restored and original features, is now better known as the home of City Gallery Wellington. This exhibition space is filled with some of the most exciting art emerging from New Zealand today, as well as serving as a venue for major international exhibitions coming to the country from overseas.

The gallery itself does not have its own permanent collection, but instead features an array of work focusing on visual arts, architecture and design as part of its ever-changing exhibition showcased in its seven main exhibition spaces.

Before you head inside, pay a visit to Square2, a video installation space with pieces by local, national and even global artists. Drop by any time, as films play here 24 hours a day.

At the Deane Gallery, you'll discover stunning works of Maori and Pacific Island art, whereas in the Hirschfeld Gallery, there are works by locally-based artists in Wellington. Exhibits include traditional paintings, photography, sculptures, video, mixed media and even furniture on display. The gallery hosts up to eight different exhibitions every year.

To find out what’s on, log on to the gallery's website before your visit. If there are younger people in your party, there are activity booklets that can be downloaded beforehand. These will offer creative games and pursuits perfect for the children to enjoy and learn from as they make their way round. For children between the ages of five and eight, Art Explorer: Civic Square is the ideal attraction, whereas for older children, between the ages of nine and 12, the Art Explorer: Waterfront area will appeal.

Located right in the centre of the downtown district in Civic Square, City Gallery Wellington is served by several bus routes. If you’re coming by car, there are no on-site parking facilities, so you will have to park in one of the surrounding streets. Entry to the gallery is free, although you may have to pay for certain parts of the exhibition. The gallery is open every day, except for Christmas Day.
