Depending on where you’re coming from, your flight to York could be no sweat at all or it could drag on forever. We've rounded up some handy tips that will help you start your next unforgettable escape on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane ride can be a pleasure if you pack the right things. Firstly, you'll want a few basic toiletries, such as a toothbrush and some deodorant, a fresh set of clothes and a good novel. Next, find a spot in your carry-on bag for your electronic devices, chargers, your important medications and perhaps a quality neck pillow too. Last, but definitely not least, be sure to bring your passport, travel docs and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of prohibited items differs between air carriers, the general rule to follow is nothing flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes things like box cutters, razor blades, aerosol cans and flares. Sports equipment like hockey sticks, and objects that could harm other people, such as firearms and ammunition, aren't allowed in the cabin either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your highest priority when choosing what to wear on board. Loose, breathable clothing is a wise option, as are flat, closed-toe shoes.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Try to wander around the cabin or do some gentle exercises in your seat to improve your circulation.

A little pre-planning before your flight can make your trip to York a pleasure. Below you'll find some handy tips for a stress-free journey through security:

• Your ID and travel documents will need to be shown to security personnel. Keep them handy so you don't have to dig around for them.
• Next up is the X-ray machine. Remove anything metal on you that is likely to set off the alarm. This includes items like headphones or earphones, as well as your coat or jacket. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
• For just a few minutes, you'll have to unplug from technology. Your phone, laptop and any other electronic gadgets will also need to be sent through the scanner.
• Any liquids or gels, such as hair oil or hand cream, that you want to take on board must be no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). They must also all fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• There's a possibility that you'll be required to take your shoes off for scanning, so wearing slip-on sneakers is always a wise idea.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them in your checked baggage. They won't be allowed on board.
