If you're not prepared, airports and flying can be a real challenge. But don't hit the panic button just yet. Follow these handy tips for a comfortable start to your getaway in York. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Flying can be a pleasure if you take the right stuff. First things first, you'll need toiletry items, such as toothpaste, a toothbrush and some deodorant, a fresh set of clothes and a good book. Next, make room in your carry-on bag for your phone, tablet and chargers, medications and perhaps a blow-up neck pillow too. Last, but definitely not least, be sure to take your passport, travel papers and some cash.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of restricted items can differ between air carriers, the general rule of thumb is nothing sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes things like screwdrivers, blades, fireworks and fuel. Sports equipment like golf clubs, and items that could harm passengers, such as guns and swords, are also banned from the cabin.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your aim here is to be as comfortable as you can. Pick easy-to-remove footwear, dress in loose, breathable clothing and remember to bring a sweater in case you get chilly in the cabin.
• Caused by lengthy periods of inactivity, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot condition that can affect some passengers during long-haul flights. Reduce the risks by drinking water, keeping your legs and feet moving and wearing compression tights or socks.

It's all about being organised. We've compiled some top tips for a speedy trip through airport security. Watch out York, here you come:

• Airport security personnel first need to establish that you have a valid passport and matching travel documents before you're allowed to proceed any further. Keep them close by.
• Next up, both you and your carry-on luggage will be X-rayed. To speed things up, take off anything that might set the alarms off. Personal belongings such as your coat, belt and earphones will be required to go through the machine.
• Your electronic devices like phones and laptops will also have to go on a tray to be scanned. Don't worry though, you'll be back online in no time.
• Any gels or liquids, such as lip balm or cologne, that you want to bring on board need to be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, they all must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• It's also likely that you'll need to remove your shoes to be X-rayed, so wearing lightweight sneakers is always a clever idea.
• Pocket knives and other sharp items are not allowed in the cabin. They'll be seized at security, so pack them in your checked luggage.
