We've got the lowdown on how to make your journey as stress-free as possible. Follow our top tips and you'll be breezing through the airport and having a ball in Windsor in no time. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• It's easy — first, pack in your passport, important documents, bank cards and daily medications. Next, you'll need some entertainment to while away the hours. A thrilling novel and a tablet crammed with your favourite shows are good options. If you intend to catch forty winks, a quality neck pillow and a pair of earplugs will also be useful. Finally, leave some space for a toothbrush and some deodorant to ensure you touchdown feeling fresh and ready to go.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of prohibited items differs between air carriers, the general rule of thumb is nothing sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes things like screwdrivers, knives, spray paint and fireworks. Sporting equipment like bows and arrows, and objects that could harm other people, such as firearms and ammunition, won't be allowed on board either.

What to wear on a flight:

• You'll want to go for comfort over style. Prepare for temperature changes in the cabin by wearing layers, and wear easy-to-remove shoes like slip-ons.
• Caused by sustained periods of immobility, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clotting condition that can affect passengers during long-haul flights. Lower your risks by staying hydrated, keeping your ankles and legs moving and wearing compression socks or tights.

As savvy travellers know, the secret is to be well organised before you get to airport security. That way, you'll be boarding that plane to Windsor in next to no time. Follow these helpful tips and get your holiday off to a fantastic start:

• Have your ID and boarding pass handy. They're the first items you'll be asked to show at airport security.
• Next up is the X-ray machine. Empty your pockets and remove anything that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes items like headphones or earphones, as well as heavy jackets or coats. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
• Your electronic devices like phones and laptops will also need to go on a tray to be scanned. Don't worry, you'll be back online in no time.
• Any liquids or gels, such as shampoo or hand cream, that you want to bring on board need to be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). They must also all fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• There's a chance you'll be required to remove your shoes to be X-rayed, so wearing lightweight sneakers is always a wise idea.
• Airlines will not allow any pocket knives or other sharp items in your carry-on luggage. If you must bring these kinds of items, pack them safely in your checked luggage.
