If you're poorly prepared, travelling can be a real challenge. But there's no need to worry. Follow these helpful hints and enjoy a pleasant start to your getaway in San José. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Air travel can be a comfortable experience if you've got all the right gear. First things first, you'll need basic toiletry items, such as deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush, a spare change of clothes and a good novel. Next, find a spot in your bag for your phone, tablet and chargers, any vital medications and perhaps a quality neck pillow too. Last, but definitely not least, remember to take your passport, travel papers and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of banned items can differ between airlines, the general rule to follow is avoid carrying anything flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes screwdrivers, blades, spray paint and flares. Sporting equipment like bows and arrows, and objects that could harm other people, such as swords and batons, can't come on board with you either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your top priority is to feel as comfortable as you can. Opt for a pair of slip-on shoes, dress in loose, natural fibers and remember to take a sweater in case it gets cold in the cabin.
• The result of sustained periods of inactivity, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clotting condition that can affect some passengers during long flights. Lower your risks by drinking water, keeping your lower limbs moving and wearing compression socks to help your circulation.

As seasoned travellers know, the secret is to be organised before you reach security. That way, you'll be boarding that plane to San José in the blink of an eye. Follow these helpful tips and get your holiday off to a fantastic start:

• First things first. Your passport and boarding pass will need to be shown to airport security. Keep them someplace accessible so you don't hold up the queue.
• After that, both you and your hand luggage must be X-rayed. To make the process quick and painless, remove anything that is likely to trigger the alarm. Personal belongings such as your coat, belt and earphones will be required to go through the machine.
• All your electronics, including your phone and tablet, will also need to be separately scanned.
• Any liquids or gels, such as shampoo or hairspray, that you want to bring on board need to be in containers no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, everything must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• It's also possible you'll be required to remove your shoes to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on sneakers is always a clever idea.
• Sharp items are prohibited in the cabin. They'll be seized at security, so pack them in your checked bags.
