If you're not prepared, air travel can be challenging. But there's no need to hit the panic button just yet. Follow these tips and tricks and enjoy a trouble-free start to your time in Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• The trick to having a worry-free travel experience is to be prepared. So, let's start with the basics: passport, official ID, credit cards and daily medications. Next, bring on board items that'll help while away those hours, like some electronic gadgets or a few magazines. It's also smart to bring your chargers, a comfy neck pillow and a pair of earplugs. Finally, be sure to squeeze in toiletries like a toothbrush, facial wipes and a spare set of clothes.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Check carefully that you don't have sharp objects (like a pocket knife) lurking in the bottom of your carry-on luggage. Other prohibited items include explosive or flammable products, such as aerosol cans and fuel, and liquids and gels in containers with a volume of more than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• You'll want to go for comfort over style. Prepare for temperature changes by dressing in layers, and wear flat, slightly roomy shoes like slip-ons.
• Most of us have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged periods of sitting. To minimize your risk on board, stay hydrated, consider wearing compression socks and keep your feet and legs moving.

The secret is to be well organised before you arrive at airport security. That way, you'll be stepping onto that plane to Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci in a flash. Follow these helpful tips and get your trip off to a spectacular start:

• Be sure to keep your passport and boarding pass someplace easily accessible. They're the first items you'll be asked to present to security.
• The X-ray machine comes next. Remove anything on you that is likely to set off the alarm. This includes items like headphones or earphones, as well as bulky coats or jackets. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
• For just a few moments, you'll have to unplug from technology. Your tablet, phone and any other electronics also need to be sent through the scanner.
• Any liquids or gels, such as hair oil or hand cream, that you want to take on board must be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, they all must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• Lightweight sneakers are a practical footwear choice as you're less likely to be asked to remove them when passing through security. Safety boots and other heavy-style shoes are often subjected to extra screening.
• Airlines won't allow any sharp or pointed objects in your carry-on luggage. If you need to bring these kinds of items, pack them safely in your checked baggage.
