• A plane ride can be a pleasure if you take the right things. Firstly, you'll want some basic toiletries, such as lip balm and hand cream, a spare change of clothes and a good novel. Secondly, find a spot in your bag for your phone, tablet and chargers, your medications and maybe a quality neck pillow too. • Pack all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked baggage. Any liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) won't be allowed on. What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of a plane aren't the place for a fashion parade. Don comfortable layers and choose shoes that are flat, roomy and easy to slip on and off.
• Most travellers have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by long periods of inactivity. To lower your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression socks or tights and keep your legs and feet moving.

• Your boarding pass and passport will need to be presented to security personnel. Have them close by so you don't hold up the queue.

• Slip-on shoes are a sensible footwear choice as you're less likely to be asked to remove them when going through security. Boots and other heavy shoes are often subjected to extra screening.
• Airlines will not allow any sharp objects in your hand luggage. If you need to bring these kinds of items, pack them safely in your checked baggage.
