How to get around Larnaca

Larnaca itself is not a huge town, but this makes it perfect for exploring on foot.

Cabs are perhaps the best way to get from the airport to the city centre, although bus services also run.

Being located at the heart of the Mediterranean, Larnaca – like much of Cyprus – attracts many visitors to its beautiful beaches. Alongside the central promenade, Finikoudes and Mackenzie beaches both offer a buzzing selection of bars along the waterfront.

What many of the revellers here don’t realise though is that beneath the tranquil Mediterranean waves, a rusting behemoth lies. The MS Zenobia sank here during her maiden voyage in 1980. Luckily, nobody was injured. However, the wreck is now one of the world’s most famous and popular diving sites, making it a definite bucket list option for any keen scuba diver.

Tips for travelling in Larnaca

Before visiting Cyprus, be sure to make yourself aware of the political situation. Namely, the Turkish occupation of the north in the 1970s, which resulted in a hard border with the Greek Cypriot south. The border remains to the present day. While it is unlikely to pose any issues during your visit, it is simply good to approach the subject with sensitivity if it comes up in conversation with the locals.
