• First, pack in your passport, travel documents, wallet and daily medications. Next, you'll want some extra in-flight entertainment to while away the hours. A juicy novel and a laptop crammed with your favourite shows are some fantastic options. If you intend to catch a few z's, a neck pillow and a pair of noise-cancelling headphones will also be useful. Finally, squeeze in a few toiletry items so you'll touchdown feeling fresh as a daisy.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of banned items can differ between air carriers, the general guide to follow is nothing flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes things like knives, scissors, fuels and bleaching agents. Sports equipment like baseball bats, and objects that could harm passengers, such as firearms and ammunition, won't be allowed on board either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Go for comfort over style. Prepare for changes in cabin temperature by dressing in layers, and opt for closed-toe, flat footwear like slip-ons.
• The result of sustained periods of inactivity, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clotting condition that can affect some passengers on long-haul flights. Reduce the risks by drinking water, keeping your legs and feet moving and wearing compression tights or socks.

The answer is — be prepared. We've put together some top tips for a fuss-free trip through security. Watch out Lafayette, here you come:

• Keep your boarding pass and passport within easy reach. They're the first things you'll be asked to present to airport security.
• After that, both you and your hand luggage must be X-rayed. To make the process quick and painless, remove anything that might trigger the alarms. Items like your belt, jacket and headphones need to go through the machine.
• Your electronic devices like phones and laptops will also have to go on a tray to be scanned. Don't worry though, you'll be back online soon enough.
• Want to bring along your favourite perfume or cologne? No problem. As long as the volume is no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a clear zip-close bag, you can bring it with you in your carry-on.
• The right choice of footwear can save you several precious minutes. Boots are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Lightweight sneakers usually aren't.
• Airlines will not allow any pocket knives or other sharp items to come on board with you. If you need to bring these kinds of items, pack them safely in your checked baggage.
