Depending on where you’re coming from, your journey to Alexandria could be a breeze or it could drag on forever. We've put together some tips that will help you start your next great adventure on a positive note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• The secret to having a stress-free travel experience is to plan ahead. So, let's start with the basics: passport, official ID, cash and medications. Next, bring items that'll help keep you busy, like your laptop or a few magazines. You'll also want to pack your chargers, a neck pillow and a pair of earplugs. Finally, don't forget to chuck in toiletry items like a toothbrush, facial wipes and a clean T-shirt.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Squeeze all your full-sized bottles of hair gel and hairspray in your checked baggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated. Sharp or pointed objects, like your trusty pocket knife, and dangerous products which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosol cans, flares and strong acids, are also not allowed.

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your top priority when choosing what to wear on your flight. Loose clothing is a smart choice, as are roomy, closed-toe shoes.
• You've probably heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of sitting. To lower your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression socks or tights and move your lower limbs often.

As seasoned travellers know, the secret is to be organised before you reach the airport security gate. That way, you'll be boarding that plane to Alexandria in no time at all. Follow these tips and get your holiday off to a spectacular start:

• Be sure to have your travel documents and passport close by. They're the first things you'll be asked for by airport security.
• The X-ray machine is up next. Remove anything metal on you that is likely to set off the alarm. This includes items like headphones or earphones, as well as your coat or jacket. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.
• Your electronic devices like phones and laptops will also have to go on a tray for inspection. No need to worry though, you'll be back online before you know it.
• Want to bring along your favourite perfume? As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a zip-lock bag, you can bring it with you in your carry-on luggage.
• There's a good chance you'll need to take your shoes off for scanning, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a smart idea.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them in your checked baggage. They won't be allowed on board.
