This is a very well managed hotel. It was busy when I stayed. I had a problem, beyond the control of the hotel, but the staff managed it perfectly. I would stay again.

Difficult to fault; as the saying goes, does exactly what it says on the tin. No pretensions, no luxury, just down-to-earth excellence. Efficient management, first-class staff who are attentive and most helpful. Kitchen staff willing to adapt to the foibles of guests. An all-round excellent performance. And easy parking to boot! Just two little quibbles. I can understand why folk don't like name badges but those in charge should introduce themselves; they may be well known to regulars but that is no help to complete strangers. And what a shame that in a well-produced menu the chef has not succeeded in mastering the art of crispy batter.

Lovely hotel in Castle Douglas
We loved this hotel. The staff and owners were all so lovely and helpful, giving us some bread so our daughter could feed the same at the nearby loch. The meals were great and the rooms comfortable. Wholly recommended.

Fantastic hotel!
Absolutely fantastic hotel with full restaurant and bar. Dog friendly with a private car park. Delicious food with quick and friendly service. Room always clean and comfortable with possibly the greatest shower I have ever used - hot and strong! So grateful for the fantastic stay, we had come up to allow me to take my driving test and their fabulous breakfast helped prepare me! I passed my test! Thank you again.

Embarrassing choice of hotel for my Thai friend
This room was booked to host a guest coming from Thailand. She, (the guest) has travelled from the far East expecting a warm, friendly greeting and family get-together in Scotland. She didn't expect to have a Christian religious service taking place in the guest's lounge on Sunday morning. Nor did I, when I had to try and explain that this is not normal in any hotel that I as a British person have ever experienced... She also didn't enjoy having a separate bathroom as I paid for a room with a bathroom inside the room. She and I certainly did not expect the bar to close abruptly at 10.30 pm on Friday and Saturday night and NO suggestion of a resident bar/lounge available after 10.30 pm. Furthermore, the person who ordered our party of six out of the bar was at best, unprofessional and at worst, quite rudely abrupt with ordering us to drink up and get out. I have no problem with the cleanliness of the place and the food was very good and I was happy to tip the waiters who gave us good service, but... I will never book this place again because I have no wish to embarrass any other friends from Thailand or anywhere else with such a bad choice of places to stay in Scotland.

Hi Edward, We're very sorry to read your review. To start with the positives -- we're so glad you enjoyed the food, were happy with the service (from most!) and also the cleanliness of the hotel.To address your other points, the resident's lounge is available for local community groups to use. We have Scrabble clubs, craft and carer group meet-ups, and also the local church group you mention. They meet every week to have tea and biscuits, and although not directly affiliated with the hotel, we support them as we would any other denomination of religious or non-religious community group. I understand from your comment that a meeting of church-goers was unusual for you and your guest, but these are regular local customers who want to meet up at the weekend, chat and drink teas and coffees. I understand the chosen venue challenged your guest's expectations on this occasion, but we believe this sort of weekend community meet-up is not unusual in Britain.Regarding the room you booked, it's the only one in the hotel that has no ensuite. It's a single room with a private bathroom that has its own key, so no-one else has access. Every other room in the hotel has ensuite facilities, which is why this one is priced at a lower rate. The hotel was fully booked that weekend, but in any other circumstances we would 100% have upgraded you had you/your guest chatted about your disappointment at the time. We'll take a look at the wording on the website to make sure it's doubly clear that this has no ensuite bathroom and has a private bathroom instead.As for the 10.30pm closing time, this has been a post-Covid change to our hours. There are other bars (albeit few) in the town which stay open until 12pm, but we no longer do so. We are very sorry to hear that the manageress was abrupt with you and your party at closing time, and we'll speak to her about the issue ASAP. It's not the level of customer service we expect of our staff. We'll also make sure to check the website to make sure our closing times are clear on all platforms for future guests, so they can make other arrangements for drinking later in the evening and can avoid any disappointment.I trust that despite the surprise Christian meet-up, en-suite confusion and early bar closing time your guest still managed a great time with family in Scotland. We're happy you had a good meal with us and trust there were plenty of friendly faces in Castle Douglas, inside and outside the hotel, to help provide the warm welcome she deserved.Wishing you both safe onward travels and happiness in future.

Short notice booking
Swift and efficient checkin. The young lady on reception was very helpful with local information and arranged and setup a table for dinner while i dropped my luggage to my upgraded room. My room was recently decorated and spotless. Bed very comfortable. Due to my early morning departure a packed lunch was arranged at no extra charge. Overall i would recommend using the hotel. The staff are key to operating first class service in the hospitality world, all friendly polite and attentive to detail.

It was a very central location very convenient for getting about Dumfries and Galloway. The staff were very welcoming and very helpful. The room itself was good the meals were nice also

This was booked at short notice and my son has a gluten intolerance and worries about food, however the staff were brilliant in seen to our needs, they also serve a great pint of beer with superb steaks.

Think it had been closed a few days. Brrr
The hotel was freezing throughout and the heating was only turned on just before I arrived. The room was tiny and the duvet was a summer one. I am from the North as well so not a softy. Would have been okay if it was cheaper but expected more tbh.

You are quite right, we had been closed a few days for Christmas and although in previous years we'd have the heating off and on during closure, this year our energy costs have quadrupled. Apologies that it took longer to heat up than we'd have liked, and that the heater/duvet combo wasn't right for you. Room 7 is our smallest single room so it's def on the wee-er side! All the best for your onward journey and the rest of 2023.

Well run old coaching inn.
Very helpful hosts. Went out of their way to be of service. Everything was dealt with very promptly. Rooms very clean and appeared recently decorated. My partner found her bed too hard for her liking and didn't sleep well. I slept fine. Water pressure in the en suite shower was low.
