Bargara Travel Guide

Bundaberg
Bargara
Separated from Bundaberg by lush fields of sugarcane, this tropical paradise has palm tree-lined beaches, surf breaks, a lively esplanade strip and spacious parks.

Visit Bargara and you’ll feel as though you’re on a distant island in the heart of the Pacific Ocean. The seaside suburb of Bundaberg is a reef-fringed oasis with year-round beach appeal. Explore its laid-back swimming beaches or carve up the breaks with your surfboard. Relax in leafy parks and gardens and get a closer look at the local wildlife when you visit the village’s turtle rookery.

A great way to begin your day in Bargara is with a morning stroll along the Esplanade. This paved pathway stretches for 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) and is perfect for bikes, strollers and scooters. Wander along the coastline and visit the viewing platforms or choose a picnic area to return to later.

Magnificent beaches stretch from Neilson’s Park to Archie’s Beach. Take the kids for a swim in the Basin, which is a beautifully sheltered swimming area that is best explored at high tide. Bring your snorkel and mask to have a peek at the little fish that inhabit the waters. More snorkeling sites can be found at Woongarra Marine Park. Bargara Beach is a family-friendly beach directly fronting the northern section of the village. Surfers can check out the breaks that stretch from either side of this patrolled beach. For family fun on dry land, head to Turtle Park and discover the exciting playground, which is shaped like a turtle.

Between November and March, don’t miss the chance to learn about endangered sea turtles at the Mon Repos Turtle Rookery. You might spot their tracks in the sands of Kelly’s, Rifle Range and Neilson’s Park Beach.

Keen anglers will love dropping a line into the man-made reef at Bargara. For a closer look at the stunning reef systems, join a charter tour of the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

Bargara is a 20-minute drive to the east of Bundaberg and can be reached by car, public bus and taxi. Choose from cozy inns to beachfront apartments. Enjoy year-round beach fun in the sunny suburb of Bargara.
