The suburb of Birkerød oozes local history whilst functioning as an important cultural hub for northern Zealand.
The centre of Birkerød consists of Birkerød Kirke, with a history going right back to the 12th century, surrounded by old village houses and a large vicarage, Hovedgaden and the town hall. It can also boast Mantziusgaarden, an arts centre renowned for having the country’s best and most elegant acoustic auditoria, ideal for theatre and concerts.
Birkerød got its own railway station in 1864 on the Copenhagen – Hillerød line, which was converted to the S-bane commuter line in 1968. The town grew from village to suburb, yet retained its village centre with shops and businesses, the main branch of the Rudersdal Bibliotekerne libraries, cinema and great places to eat. Active types can use the facilities of Birkerød Tennisklub and Furesø Golfklub.
A holiday in Birkerød will reveal a charming town with a lot to offer. Shop on the pedestrianised Hovedgaden, with its wide range of shops, cafés and restaurants. A short walk from here brings you to the lake at Birkerød Sø, where you can walk around the shore or go fishing.
If you’re interested in nature, you should not miss the bird reserve at Vaserne, covering over 86hectares of marsh and meadows. There is an excellent footpath system for exploring the fascinating scenery and rich birdlife and flora. If more fresh air is needed, the surrounding area can offer a lot more – mountainbiking amongst the trees of Rude Skov, or walks through the scenic landscape of Søllerød Naturpark.
Getting to and from Birkerød is easy, with its centrally located rail station offering direct connections to the centre of Copenhagen and on to the airport. The ride from Birkerød to Copenhagen’s central station takes just 30 minutes, and there are excellent roads to take you there by car in about the same time via Rute16 or Rute201.
