BaltimoreUnited States of America

Explore the city that gave birth to the American national anthem, visit interactive museums and aquariums and discover why it is called "Charm City".

Formerly an important trading port, the city of Baltimore began in 1729 as a ship-building town. Its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean enabled the city to capitalise on trading both nationally and internationally and it wasn't long before it had become a significant manufacturing and trade centre. Since the 1970s Baltimore has been having a cultural and architectural face lift. The Inner Harbor is a picturesque example of the success of this urban renewal. The fact that the city's nickname is "Charm City" is testament to the friendly and welcoming locals of Baltimore.

With so many things to see and do in Baltimore you will need to be prepared. Explore everything the city has to offer by checking out the Visitor Center in Inner Harbor. Here you will get a three-day pass which gives you reduced prices on particular attractions as well as transport options.

There are a multitude of entertainment and cultural options available. Make sure that you visit the stunning National Aquarium in Baltimore. Further down the waterfront is the Maritime Museum and just outside that you can hop aboard the USS Constellation which is the last remaining floating Civil War ship. Take a water taxi to the end of the seafront and visit the nationally significant Fort McHenry which inspired the United States national anthem.

Just outside the city are some of the best cultural spots to hit. At Baltimore Museum of Art you can see work by 19th-century European masters – Matisse, Van Gogh, Renoir and many more. Take the kids along to Nashville Zoo or have a VIP-breakfast with the animals in Maryland Zoo. All ages will love the B&O Railroad Museum. Finish off the evening with a relaxing time at Boordy Vineyards.

Public transport is very accessible and frequent with the Charm City Circulator shuttle bus operating for free. Why not book a water taxi for a novel way to see "Charm City".

I felt the main area to go to was the Inner Harbor area which was a 20-30 minute walk. The kids sometimes found it hard to do in the heat.

Baltimore is OK. Harbour area is great. Tainted by a lot of homeless people and a general feeling that it is unsafe.
