To get to this extremely remote low pool called the Ernst Tinaja, you have to drive a high-clearance or 4WD vehicle on Old Ore Road in Big Bend National Park and hike about a mile. It was sweltering in April but so worth it to see the pink and orange flaky layers of rock laid down by eons of a shallow inland sea. The pool is a scary toxic green, and with its steep sides is a death trap to creatures other than birds or insects. Alpine is a small town between Marfa, TX and Big Bend. It is full of small diners and great, West Texas shops. Nice street art too!

Room was clean, bed was comfortable. The heating/cooling is a bit noisy. Outside the room would benefit from some better walkways as it was very easy to pick up thorns in your shoes.

We had to change rooms twice. The first room had no working power outlets. The 2nd room TV set had been smashed. The hotel manager said he assumed the previous guests got into a fight. Was much nicer than I was expecting for a tiny out of the way town. The room was very clean. The only challenge was the water in the shower was cold. Out of the spigot it was hot but when you turned on the shower it was cold. Not an issue, just took a bath.
